THE EXTRA MILES

Last week I was in a conference room in San Francisco where I meet a lovely gentleman named Tim. We are both attending a two day mastermind with a mutual business coach and at the end of the two days, Tim leans across the table and says to me;

‘Want to come to a dinner I host in Austin, Texas? It’s next week.’
‘….Sure?’

If you aren’t great at US geography like I was in that exact moment, it’s a whole state down and three states over. Also Texas is ENORMOUS and it’s about in the middle. It was also the height of summer and at 100F (40C) and 50% humidity.

I agreed and planned to come to Austin for three days, a day before the dinner, be at the dinner and leave the day after.

I am happy to report that I have now been here for nine days. I cancelled a two week trip to Los Angeles. I’ve hired a car, I’ve moved into a cheap Motel 6, and have gained great joy putting my hair into a messy bun every single morning.
What happened, I hear you ask?

Well, it turns out that Austin is FREAKING AWESOME.

That one dinner party invite that was given to me two weeks ago all the way back in San Francisco – changed the game for me.

I’ve met the absolute key players in Austin, TX.
I’ve booked paid speaking gigs and pair consulting work.
I’ve had at least a dozen meetings and appointments to attend.
I’ve made friends that I know I will have for the rest of my life.

If I’m honest about it, I wasn’t thrilled to be coming to Austin initially.
It would have been easier to stay in San Francisco.
It would have been more cost efficient.
My hair wouldn’t look like I am part llama.
But I wouldn’t have the results I have right now.

While trying to figure out what to write about this week, I was at Tim’s place and a framed picture caught my eye. It was in a beautiful script and simply read ‘Go the extra mile. It’s never crowded’.
I thought back to the hellish 36 hour commute on the bus to get there, the heat, the humidity, the crap Motel 6 bed and realised this moment right here – was the extra mile.

I intended to go that extra mile for just three days and I feel like everything has changed.

So… where do you feel like you need to go the extra mile in your life in your business right now?
